High-Purity and Ultra-High-Purity Copper Explained

In 2022, we completed a 100-ton annual capacity 6N copper refining project for Zijin Group. Through precise control of the electrolysis process and optimization of electrolytic techniques, we achieved mass production of ultra-high-purity copper.

Key production measures included:

Facility Requirements:

Constructed dust-free cleanrooms for electrolysis workshops

Implemented sealed electrolytic cells

Established self-cleaning electrolyte circulation systems
These measures prevented contamination from both the production environment and electrolyte system.

Process Optimization:

Determined optimal current density parameters

Improved circulation methods to eliminate concentration polarization

Ensured high-quality cathode copper deposition

Unique Purification:

Developed specialized washing techniques

Removed residual electrolyte impurities from honeycomb structures on cathode surfaces

Prevented product quality degradation

Through comprehensive control of production environment, electrolysis processes, and purification methods, we successfully achieved stable production of 6N ultra-high-purity copper.

Technical Highlights:

Achieved 99.9999% Cu purity consistently

Established complete contamination control protocols

Implemented innovative electrolyte management

Developed proprietary cathode treatment methods

This project represents a significant advancement in China's high-purity copper production capabilities, particularly for semiconductor and advanced electronics applications.

High-Purity and Ultra-High-Purity Copper Explained

High-purity copper contains at least 99.999% copper (5N purity), where "N" indicates purity level - more Ns mean higher purity. Current standards classify high-purity copper into four grades: HPCu-7N, HPCu-6N5, HPCu-6N, and HPCu-5N. The industry generally considers copper exceeding 99.9999% purity as ultra-high-purity copper.

Primary Uses of High-Purity Copper
The semiconductor and flat-panel display industries drive most demand for high-purity copper:

  • Semiconductor sputtering targets require minimum 5N5 purity (99.9995%)

  • Flat-panel display targets need at least 5N purity (99.999%)

Market Position of High-Purity Copper
This specialized material plays a vital role in manufacturing sputtering targets for integrated circuits and large-area displays. As a key enabler of microelectronics innovation, high-purity copper supports advancements across the semiconductor sector.
